Walk through the school courtyard during lunch, and you’ll likely see a new kind of geometry taking shape. Traditional social cliques are being replaced by perfectly formed circles of students, their eyes locked on a small, colorful, pellet-filled sack soaring in mid-air. It doesn’t require any screens, no tryouts or varsity athletic skills, just a willingness to continue to keep the hacky sack flying. What started as an isolated pastime has now become an arena of casual teamwork.
The choice to gather a group of friends and start playing hacky sack rather than doom scrolling during breaks has had an impact on the student body that was felt almost instantly.
“I noticed circles [of hacky sack play] popping up around a month ago on campus. I think it’s really cool. I think it brings people together over a common, fun activity to do,” said freshman Marin Setser.
The simple desire for uncomplicated connection seems to be the driving force behind the game’s resurgence. In an environment often fractured by different schedules, interests and social groups, the hacky sack circle serves as a neutral place on the chess board of high school social life. Anyone can step in, find a rhythm and become a part of a team.

This inclusive atmosphere creates a rare pocket of calm on campus, offering students a chance to burn off energy without the rigid structure or stress of organized school sports.
“It’s active,” said freshman Jackson Nakazono, who plays hacky sack on a regular basis. “Everyone is laid back and trying to have as much fun as possible, especially freshmen because those kids usually get more energetic. I feel like it’s good to learn control because [hacky sack] is all about keeping yourself steady so that you don’t lose track of [the hacky sack], but it’s still an active sport in a sense.”
Hacky sack can be the exact balance between high energy movement and total focus that keeps students hooked. By blending physical control with a completely stress free environment, the game gives players a unique way to let off some steam before the bells ring for the start of classes.
It’s hard to say how long this trend will last before the next craze takes over. But for now, the game has carved out a rare, stress-free zone on campus where the walls of pressure and emotional buildup collapse as the hacky sack circle forms.
