The FVHS womens soccer team is doing great as they get ready for the end of the season. After a big 7-0 win against Garner, the Bengals are the conference champions. The team has a record of 18-2-2. A big part of this success comes from the hard work of juniors Violet Terrasse and Sofia Del Valle.
Terrasse plays in the midfield and does a little bit of everything. She is second in the team in goals and also helps her teammates score.
“I definitely help with building up the set play and leading it to an attacking play,” Terrasse said. She explained that she stays in open space so she can “find the ball pretty easily” to help the team move forward. The team has scored 59 goals in their last ten games, and Terrasse said their goal is “to score as much as we can” by playing with 100% effort in every single game.
Sofia Del Valle plays on the wing and has nine assists this season. She says she can pass so well because her teammates are always in the right spots.
“Everybody on my team knows how to position themselves on an attacking play,” said Del Valle. “They find space really easily, so when I’m running down the field, it’s really easy for me to find someone.” She also thinks the team plays well because they hang out a lot off the field. This team’s bonding is the secret to their undefeated conference record.
Both players feel like they have to lead the team now that they are juniors. Del Valle said that since moving up from JV to varsity, soccer has become more important to her. She tries to “lead as an example” every time she plays.
Even though the team is winning a lot, they try not to act like they are better than everyone else.
“We definitely try not to be overconfident or cocky at all,” Terrasse said. She knows that in soccer, “anything can happen,” so they stay focused on winning the next game.
Now that they have won their conference, the Bengals want to win something even bigger. They are taking their fast scoring and strong teamwork into the state playoffs.
Terrasse made it clear what the team is dreaming about for the end of the year.
“I wanna win the state title,” she said. If the Bengals keep playing this way, they have a chance to make that dream come true.
Today at 6 p.m. they have their first playoff game at home against New Bern High School. Come out and support them as they make a state championship run.
