North Carolina’s new abortion bill is dangerous intrusion into private medicine

The North Carolina House of Representatives is once again becoming a battleground for reproductive rights, as lawmakers advance a new bill aimed at tightening the state’s abortion laws. It was filed in May 2026 and is a proposed constitutional amendment that seeks to establish that human life begins at fertilization.

According to a summary from UNC at Chapel Hill, the bill defines an embryo as a separate human person entitled to full legal protection from fertilization until natural death. The bill also says that if a person gets an abortion, then they are held accountable for attempted murder or first degree murder.

According to WCNC, the bill also allows the use of deadly force by any person to prevent the wilful destruction of a life, potentially applying to abortion. It also means that a woman who seeks abortion or any physicians who are involved can be held for attempted murder and could get killed.

This bill is strongly against abortions and places unreasonable restrictions. Many North Carolina residents are against this bill. Initial sponsors of this bill were Ben Moss and Keith Kidwell. Moss has removed his name from the bill, following the public’s negative opinion.

Speaker Destin Hall also has dismissed the proposal, stating that it is “not a serious bill” and has no chance of passing.

FVHS junior Joshita Vardapati said, “I think it’s not fair because it should be our right to do anything we would like to, instead of setting rules that restrict our rights.”

Ultimately, this proposed legislation represents a significant step backward for North Carolina. When politicians attempt to legislate reproductive healthcare, they strip individuals of their bodily autonomy and personal freedom. North Carolina must reject this overreach and remember that true equality is impossible without the right to control one’s own health, future, and body.
