Should schools help pay for extra activities?

Extracurricular activities are a huge part of high school. They help students socialize, to develop team building skills and even figure out what they want to do in the future. However, joining these activities is expensive. Between fees, equipment, uniforms and travel costs, some students simply cannot afford to participate. This raises a simple question: Should schools help students pay for extracurricular activities?

Schools should help students cover some of these costs because extracurriculars are way more important than people realize. Colleges consider them during admissions, jobs really value the experience for them and they help students stay involved in school. If schools encourage students to join clubs and sports, they should also help make them affordable for everyone.

Unfortunately many students don’t get to participate due to the steep cost of them. Sports can cost hundreds, if not thousands, to play as clubs may have fees or tournament dues, and music programs often require expensive instruments or uniforms. Some families simply cannot afford all of that, especially with how expensive the cost of living already is.

When students can’t afford to join in on activities because of money, it creates an unfair situation. Two students could have the same talent or passion, but only one gets the opportunity to develop it further because they can afford it. Schools are supposed to give students equal opportunities, and helping with extracurricular costs could make things more fair.

At the same time, though, schools already struggle with budgets. Some people believe schools should focus their money on academics first instead of extracurriculars. This inherently makes sense because schools still need to pay for teachers, technology and supplies. And honestly, it would be difficult for schools to fully pay for every student’s activity fees.

Because of these limitations, schools probably should not pay for everything, but they could at least offer some support. Fee reductions, fundraisers, scholarships or equipment rentals could help students participate without putting significant financial pressure on families. Even a small amount of support would make a big difference for students who want to be involved.

Extracurricular activities are extremely important for students’ development  outside of the classroom, and students should not lose out on these opportunities just because of money.
