The FVHS mens wrestling team got first place in the conference championship Thursday, Jan. 15 at South Garner High School. They fought against six other schools within the Greater Neuse River Conference. In the end, they went undefeated. Additionally, FVHS womens wrestling got second place in the conference.
Senior Jayden Manchego, who has a record of 29-9, said he enjoyed his final match at the WRAL tournament.
“I wrestled the Southeast Raleigh kid for third or fourth place and I won,” said Manchego.
The wrestling team is very excited for their win. The team worked really hard and were proud of what they accomplished. They learned to stay low and not stay in one spot so there was not a chance for their opponent to attack their legs.
“I practiced a move called a ‘knee pick’ a bunch,” said Manchego. “The legs are one of the main attack spots to take someone down. A take down gives you three points.”
This is not the end though. FVHS teams still have regionals. Because they won the team conference championship, the mens team has already qualified for the dual state tournament. The first round of that tournament begins Feb. 3.
Manchego is excited for regionals but a little upset that he will have to leave wrestling. He and many other seniors are going to give it their best for regionals and states. That way, they have something to look back at and future members get to be proud of being on a conference winning team.
Come support the conference champions at the next match on Jan. 29 at Apex High School.
