The FVHS women’s wrestling team wrapped up an impressive week by demonstrating growth. Their success was based on both outstanding individual performances and a supportive team.
Early matches provided a strong tone for the team at the Wolverine Challenge Wrestling Tournament held at Wakefield High School on Nov. 15. Sophomore Makaela Roebuck won her first match which qualified her for the championship match. She then placed second in her weight class. Her early success motivated the lineup and created momentum for the team. The first rounds revealed the amount of focus that lasted throughout the event.
The intensity shown throughout their tournament became even more apparent as other wrestlers shared their own experiences. Pressures of competition influenced by both individual development and team connection presented themselves in the matches.
Four other wrestlers placed in their weight classes at the Wolverine Challenge. Sophomore Bryson Smith placed fifth; sophomore Kaitlyn Hatt placed sixth; freshman Katelyn Prestipino placed sixth; and sophomore Madelin Lusk placed fourth.
“I enjoyed meeting everybody as well as making new friends inside and outside of school,” said Lusk.
Team chemistry had a significant impact on the group’s enthusiasm during the tournament. Strong relationships helped to build a foundation for athletes of all weight classes to succeed.
“Moving forward, I should have a better mindset and have more confidence in myself,” said Hatt.
Throughout the event, mental preparation was a key element of success. Growth in this area had a significant impact on how each athlete approached each match.
Junior Zoey Healy said, “In an important or stressful match, I handle pressure by ignoring it and going straight for the point. I like to get it out of my head.”
The tournament’s competitive atmosphere created situations that required intense focus and swift decision-making. These situations demonstrated the importance of mental sharpness in wrestling success.
“I hope to see the team somewhere where everyone has accomplished what they wanted to and we were all successful,” said Prestipino.
In their most recent match on Nov. 20, the Bengals beat the NC School of Science and Math at home 47-12.
The team’s performance last week demonstrated significant progress toward long-term goals. With continuing dedication, discipline and unity, the women’s wrestling team appears to be on track for a successful season.
