Our FVHS mens varsity soccer team has officially started their post-season journey. The team ended their season with an overall record of 14-6-3 and a conference record of 9-2-1, earning them second place.
However, this is not an ordinary playoff run for our Bengals. This post-season is their first time in over 10 years they’ve won a playoff game and hosted a home playoff game.
“I feel great, I think we can definitely go far,” said senior Milton Gomez-Perez.
The players dedication has helped revive the program and bring new energy to the FVHS soccer team.
During practice, the Bengals have been focusing on protecting the ball and passing, while also watching film so they know what to expect against their opponents.
The Bengals played Pine Forest High School in the first round Nov. 4. They pulled off the win in a close game with the score being 2-1.
The Bengals next opponent is the 16-3-2 Cape Fear Colts, who are 10-0 in their conference. The Colts have scored 48 goals this season and average about 2.3 goals per match. The Bengals have scored 47 goals this season and average 2 goals per match
Facing such a challenging opponent can create lots of stress leading up to the game, but there are some different strategies the Bengals use to ease their worries.
“Before our last game I ate a good meal and I went golfing to take some of the stress off which definitely helped,” said senior Roman Rup.
Additionally, senior Ben Balsley likes to listen to music. Gomez-Perez listens to music as well but also likes to pray before, during and after each game.
Make sure to come and support your FVHS Bengals Nov. 6 at Cape Fear High School at 6:30 p.m. and watch them as they make history for our soccer program.
