Music has found its way into the hearts of each generation for thousands of years. Now, with access to any song at any time of day right at our fingertips, what are kids listening to?
Humans are incredibly emotional and music has a way of manipulating and twisting those emotions every which way. This is seen constantly in movies and advertisements. But even in day to day life, the song that’s playing in the background of an interaction can alter how one retains that memory.
Naturally, as the colder months approach us many people surround themselves with softer, more comforting melodies.
Sophomore Brady Gainey recommends “From the Start” by Laufey, a jazz-inspired pop artist whose songs have been going viral since she began self-releasing in 2020.
Laufey is a modern jazz singer and has a unique voice that seems to appeal to teens, older adults and even young children. Her style is reminiscent of mid-century pop.
Senior Maddie Clark is listening to “Motion Sickness” by Phoebe Bridgers off of the album “Stranger in the Alps.” Bridgers is another widely adored artist of today’s age with 11.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify as of Sept. 2024. Bridgers has also been in the band “boygenius” which included artists Lucy Dacus and Julian Baker.
“I love Phoebe because my friends introduced me to her and ‘Motion Sickness’ is a song I can most relate to,” said Clark.
Hotel Ugly, formerly a duo between Mike Vince and his brother Chris Fisella, is now listed as a solo indie pop project of Vince. Freshman Maimouna Diallo mentions she’s listening to “Shut Up My Moms Calling” this season.
“Shut Up My Moms Calling” was the first song released by Hotel Ugly and it currently has over one billion streams on Spotify. Despite being an indie pop artist the song has a relaxing R&B feel.
Diallo said, “I like it because it gives me autumn vibes, and the cover art also reminds me of fall.”
