The 47th president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced an event he calls ‘The Patriot Games’ via video Dec. 18, 2025. While this name sounds familiar and gives the same impression as the dystopian book series “Hunger Games,” they are not the same, so don’t get it mixed up.
The Patriot Games were proposed as an athletic competition featuring top athletes from high schools across the country that would celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. The games, rumored to happen this fall, are meant to highlight strength, fitness and loyalty to the country. Although a decent amount of rumors have been spread about the games, no further information about a location has been released. Although, we do know that the game consists of one boy and one girl participating in a four day athletic competition in the fall of 2026.
Because of the lack of information being shared with the public, opinions have varied widely. Some fans find this idea as a way to showcase the strength of the youth and encourage national pride and unity. On the other hand, some people view it as a controversial political statement and won’t support it because of its “dystopian attributes” and claims of exploiting minors. Many of these political beliefs depend on their own beliefs and their perspectives.
For students, the Patriot Games puts stress on student athletes by putting them in a tough spot. Either they could be picked for the games and face a lot of pressure from fans and family, or they can watch their peers strive to win. For young people, this can be confusing for them by mixing sports with politics. It also makes parents and other watchers dislike the idea of the Patriot Games.
However, it’s important to remember that the Patriot Games have not been tied into the schools and this solely remains a political statement that was released as an idea to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. The Patriot Games may just be an idea sparked by curiosities and might not ever be realized. The important thing to take away from this is that even small ideas can have a big impact in our society.
