The FVHS men’s tennis planned to play against Holly Springs on Thursday, Feb. 26. However, this first matchup got rained out and rescheduled.
The men’s team record last year was 11-5 overall and 11-3 in conference. Last season, their first match was against Corinth Holders, and the Bengals successfully managed to win. Hopefully, they can continue this streak throughout the upcoming season.
“I’m really excited. We’ve got a lot of returning starters, and I think we will have a successful season. I’m looking forward to the competition,” said coach Marshall Wortham.
The mens team consists of three new freshmen on the team.
“We’ve got a couple of new freshmen that are very good, and they are fitting in well. I’m excited to see how we’ll kind of gel as a team as the season goes on,” said Wortham.
The team seems to have a challenging schedule, first matching up with Holly Springs, followed by Cardinal Gibbons and then Green Hope in the first few weeks, making the team’s drive one of the most important things on the court as well as teamwork.
Even with the setback of an injury to one of the team’s top players, the team is ready to compete and hopefully dominate its opponents.
“The first match of the year is always pretty tough to know exactly how you’re going to play, but I think we will match up well,” said Wortham.
In the 24-25 season, the men’s team lost 9-0 when playing against the Holly Springs Hawks, making the upcoming game extremely important and setting a tone for the season to come.
Friday, Feb. 27, at 3:30 p.m. at Middle Creek, the Bengals will match up against the Mustangs, and hopefully, they will be able to reschedule the match against Holly Springs in the future. We wish the best of luck to the men’s tennis team and their exciting upcoming season.
