Both the mens and womens varsity basketball teams at FVHS are off to strong starts this winter, with the men beginning at 5-1 and the women at 4-1.
Early in the season, both programs have already found their rhythm and are focused on sharpening the details that will carry them deeper into conference play.
For the womens team, communication has played a major role in their early success. Sophomore Keeli Harrington said the group has been connecting well and supporting one another as they settle into their lineup.
“Our team has been doing a great job communicating with one another and helping each other out both on and off the court,” said Harrington.
She added that while the team lifts each other, staying confident individually is something they are still learning to do.
Harrington said she’s excited to see how far they can go this season, especially with hopes of improving on last year’s finish.
Junior Abby Meaney said the chemistry within the group is already showing on the court.
“Our team is doing a great job playing together and overall working as a team,” said Meaney.
She noted that rebounding is an area they are continuing to work on, but she is looking forward to more games with this group and watching everyone’s growth as the season progresses.
On the men’s side, the Bengals have kicked off their season with resilience. Senior Corbin Peacock explained that the team had limited time to prepare together, with several players, including Peacock, joining after football season.
“We only had one practice as a complete team before our first three games, and I think that shows how strong and resilient our group is,” said Peacock.
He emphasised the importance of maintaining intensity throughout entire games, especially as competition increases. For his senior year, Peacock’s goals are clear: make a deep playoff run and push for a state championship.
Senior Braydon Plummer echoed the importance of chemistry, saying it has improved with the game.
“I think our team chemistry continues to build the deeper we get into the season,” said Plummer.
He added that rebounding and shot selection remain key areas of focus as they prepare for tougher opponents down the stretch.
With both teams showing growth, toughness and strong early-season chemistry, FVHS basketball is setting itself up for an exciting season. Make sure to come support FVHS basketball on Dec. 5 at home against Willow Spring High School.
