Recently, there has been lots of talk about the Kansas City Chiefs. With close games, unexpected losses and calls favoring the Chiefs, fans believe they are not being treated the same as every other NFL team.
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs get 36 to 47 percent more favorable calls with 13,000 penalty calls from 2015 to 2023.
Students talk about the lackluster offense and slacking defense, which their record reflects.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ record is 6-6 even losing to the 6-5 Dallas Cowboys 31-28 on Thanksgiving Day.
“I can’t believe they lost to the Cowboys even with the refs on their side. It’s so hard to watch the Chiefs and actually be entertained,” said sophomore Jaden Legg.
The Chiefs are good defensively in general, but in crucial moments, the Chiefs’ defense lacks at extreme levels, with the opposing team often running through these defenses easily, allowing 78 percent of teams to convert on fourth down.
Chiefs media has always kept them at the top. Besides their 6-6 record, their big name in the NFL earns them more unfair advantage calls from the refs. The Chiefs have been under fire for years about unfair referee calls, even in close games. This leads fans to think that no matter what, the Chiefs will win somehow.
With the Chiefs not so great performance and unfair calls, fans have started to notice that teams that are better don’t get nearly as many calls as the Chiefs do. The average team gets about 45 percent of favorable calls. The Kansas City Chiefs get 36 to 45 percent more favorable calls than the other teams. For example, the Colts get from 4.5 to 5.5 favorable penalty calls while on average the Chiefs get seven favorable penalties a game that helps them win. With this, students debate that the Chiefs aren’t as good as they appear to be and are overrated.
