To a stranger, it’s a worn, teddy bear with a missing ear. To Riley Heitz, it’s a protector, and a tangible link to a childhood marked by medical challenges. Pinky is a 14-inch Ty Beanie Baby with a rattle. Riley Heitz was a baby when she met Pinky for the first time, making him the oldest friend she had. Now, this childhood companion is lost and a search is underway near RDU Airport.
Riley Heitz, the owner of Pinky the bear, was born without several fingers and has faced significant medical challenges throughout her life. As Riley grew, Pinky was always by her side.
She underwent roughly 15 surgeries as a child, and Pinky would provide reassurance through every surgery RIley went through. The bear also helped Riley break her habit of thumb-sucking.
For Riley and her family, Pinky is considered a member of her family, not just a toy.
Her mother, Danielle Heitz said, “I know you’re not human but ‘Toy Story’ really distorted my vision, he’s been in our family for 23 years. He is part of our family.”
The emotional distress over Pinky’s disappearance during their recent visit to Raleigh-Durham, puts a sentimental value on the lifelong companion.
Pinky was last seen late on a Saturday night at the WoodSpring Suites on Airport Boulevard in Morrisville, near RDU.
Riley realized Pinky was missing on Sunday. Hotel staff were informed and have been searching since. Local community members also searched for Pinky.
Rufina Boothapaty, who lives nearby, called herself “a mom caring for another mom,” searched near the dumpsters.
The search also went to 7-Eleven where Riley stopped.
FVHS students also hope that Pinky returns safely to his home.
Junior Tanushri Vivek Singaram said, “I would also feel very sad if I lost my toy that I’ve been holding onto since childhood. I hope that Pinky returns safely to his home.”
Whoever finds Pinky has a reward of $200. If you find Pinky, contact the Heitz family.
Danielle Heitz said, “We are simply asking for the kindness of the community around the Raleigh Durham area to help bring our little guy home.”
