Female athletes have made significant strides in recent years, but achieving equality in sports remains a distant reality. Mens sports often receive more funding, media coverage, and public attention than womens sports, leaving female athletes underrepresented and underpaid, according to Women in Sport.
Women in Sport explains that misogyny and prejudice toward women, combined with sexism, which is discrimination based on sex, creates ongoing barriers for reaching the ultimate goal of equality.
Junior Lydia Feldner spoke about the differences she sees between mens and womens professional sports.
“I think the men have all these professional sports and get paid so much, unlike women in sports. Think about the NBA versus the WNBA, how much more the men get paid compared to the women,” said Feldner.
She also highlighted how women’s sports are often undervalued.
“I think that men in general tend to talk down on women’s sports. They get hyped for a mens basketball game but not for a womens basketball game,” said Feldner.
Junior Brianna Veltre added that recognition and support are crucial for closing the gap.
“I feel as though men tend to receive more recognition throughout sports as they are looked at differently than women are, even when playing the same sport,” said Veltre.
She believes that to increase the numbers and attention to women’s sports, they need more promotion.
Research shows in the article Women in Sport that “24% fewer girls than boys” play team sports, and many girls stop playing during adolescence due to stereotypes or lack of support. Organizations like Women in Sport advocate for structural changes, including 50-50 representation in leadership roles and anti-misogyny policies to help close this gap.
Despite these challenges, the future looks brighter. Women’s leagues are growing, fans are paying more attention, and young athletes are demanding equality. Supporting women in sports isn’t just fair, it benefits entire communities and inspires the next generation of athletes.
