The Fuquay-Varina High School mens soccer team had an unforgettable season, advancing to the third round of the NCHSAA playoffs for the first time in more than a decade.
The Bengals fought hard, but the playoff run came to an end with a close 2-1 loss against New Hanover High School on Monday, Nov. 10. Despite the defeat, the team showed incredible skill, determination and school spirit throughout the season.
Before the big game, junior middle infielder Adam Stransky shared his excitement about the historic playoff appearance.
“It feels amazing, especially since this hasn’t been done in 14 years, since like 2011, I’m pretty sure. We have a good mindset going in. We feel confident. It’s gonna be a tough game,” said Stransky.
Stransky also spoke about the challenges they expected from their opponent.
“They have a really good guy, and he’s pretty good for his age. He’s gonna be a tough rival for our defence,” said Stransky.
The team entered the game with confidence but quickly realized it would be a battle. Both sides played with intensity, and there was very strong defense from both teams. The Bengals pushed hard, showing their speed and coordination, but they struggled to take opportunities to shoot.
After the match, senior striker Milton Gomez-Perez reflected on what the team could have done better.
“We could’ve done better with attacking rather than just moving the ball up. We weren’t taking enough shots,” said Gomez-Perez.
Even in defeat, Gomez-Perez emphasized the lessons learned and the importance of staying focused on the field.
“The advice I’d give to future varsity players is to stay focused whenever you’re out there. Don’t lose your composure. Not everyone starts at the top; you have to start at the bottom,” said Gomez-Perez.
The Bengals’ playoff journey may have ended sooner than they hoped, but the season was a major success for FVHS soccer. From overcoming tough opponents to setting a new standard for the program, the team has left a lasting mark.
