In the past, sports were mostly about putting effort and supporting your team. But in the last few years, sports betting has changed the way people look at games. What used to be friendly competition has turned into a much more stressful game to a point where fans and athletes are noticing the difference.
Sports betting has changed lots, one reason being the fans attitude towards the sport. What used to be watching for fun has turned into watching for the sake of winning money. When money becomes the main focus, people get angry faster and stop appreciating the players hard work. Some fans even blame athletes for small mistakes that cost them their parlays which isn’t fair to the players.
Another problem is the pressure it puts onto the players. It’s distracting and it’s not uncommon for players to get threatened over messages and in real time towards the player or people around them, such as their own family members.
Sports gambling brings up questions about how moral it is. It treats the players like a horse race that is bet on. There are risks of ruining people’s lives because of high stake bets that could send people into debt that would be impossible to get out of.
“I feel like sports aren’t about teamwork anymore. They’re about people trying to get rich off other people’s hard work,” said sophomore Jaden Legg.
People aren’t the only problem, players in the game could bet on themselves or rig games to win them. Recently, MLB pitchers have been accused of rigging their throws to reach a certain parlay, and players in the NBA are also facing a betting scandal.
With sports betting only getting more popular as time goes on with new generations taking it on, more sports lose their spirit due to the greed of sports betting.
