FVHS wrestling is gearing up for another intense season. From the early morning workouts to the late night weigh-ins, they are pushing themselves to the limit. The Bengals had a tough loss against Willow Springs High School on Nov. 12 but fought hard through the entire match. Some standout players include senior Brady Thomas, who is a multisport athlete, and junior Mateo Ocharon.
Mentally and physically, wrestling is a tough sport. It is draining for the mind and for the body; lots of hard work goes into it. No matter the weight class or background of the athlete, there is always a way to grow and become better.
From growing in the weight room to wrestling on the mat, preparation is really important for these athletes. Without preparing properly, it leaves them with injuries and lost matches
Thomas competes in weight class 138. He made regionals last season and finished third in conference.
“Wrestling runs in my family; my dad was a wrestler,” said Thomas. “I started wrestling and just loved it.”
To get ready for a match, Thomas says he visualizes the competition ahead of time.
Ocharon competes in weight class 165. His motivation comes from his love of combat sports and his teammates.
“I started wrestling because I really enjoy combat sports. The team keeps me passionate about it,” Ocharon said. “The mental part is the hardest, but that’s what makes you stronger.”
Another view comes from freshman AJ Remmer, who is a beginner.
“What motivated me to sign up was my dad,” said Remmer. What he is looking forward to is “using wrestling as a way to get in better shape for my main sport, lacrosse.”
Remmer said he’s excited to be part of the team and ready to contribute.
