Sophomore Ömer Deniz Demirci had one of his photos selected to be in a Raleigh photography gallery organized by A Photographer’s Place. Already known for his academics and sports, Demirci has added photography to his list of talents.
The picture was taken while climbing the Yosemite mountains. Demirci took it because he thought it looked really neat, seeing the little tree. His father told him to send the picture to a competition and so he did.
Demirci said, “I had a good feeling when I was taking it. I think you know it’s special to have the photographer’s eye. Not everyone can see it. Like a desk, maybe it’s special to a photographer, but not to everyone.”
He explained how he got a good feeling from the scene and decided to take the picture. Demirci takes pictures with a Sony A7 III, but he believes that any way you take a picture can turn it amazing.
“It’s like a hobby and a job. It really makes me happy. It allows me to relax. Usually school’s a lot of stress and a lot of homework, but this calms me,” Demirci said.
Demirci’s father was a photo journalist that went through war zones to take pictures. This is where he has learned most of his work from him. He is able to see beauty everyday because of what he was taught.
“I really like to take pictures of people, interactions, cultures, you know… I just like to take interactions between people and like seeing them smile. You really can capture the moment,” Demirci said. He also takes many pictures of sports games.
Demirci hopes that this inspires more people to go into art competitions and show their work. He explained “what you do has to have a meaning” like artists with a pen and paper or paint.
The sophomore now joins the many other artists who are published outside of the school.
