“Not your average book club” is the slogan of TinyABC, Fuquay-Varina High School’s student-led book club. What makes this club so unique, as their slogan states?

“It’s a flexible setup. Unlike other book clubs, we choose a genre and let the members pick whatever book they want within that genre. It keeps everyone hooked and not tied to just one book,” said junior Crystal Fwamini.

TinyABC was formed in the spring semester of the 2022-2023 school year by Vivian White and Ximena Mayorga, who are president and vice president respectively. White said that she wanted to form a club that “I could join for fun, rather than another service organization.”

“The club is laid back. It’s a safe, welcoming space for people to just talk.” Mayorga explained. Their name, TinyABC, is an abbreviation of ‘This is not your Average Book Club.” This was a creative endeavor White and Mayorga made during one of their classes last year.

TinyABC has started back up again for the 2023-2024 school year, with meetings every month. There are smaller, unofficial meetings during the month that members can attend. Every month, the club votes on a genre to read and picks a book from that genre to discuss at the next official meeting the next month.

The club is more of a “just for fun” setting, according to White.

“I like how it’s more relaxed, because all of the other clubs we go to it’s super uptight. Like, ‘oh, you have to miss work for the club’. But here everyone just talks about whatever. And we talk about books, what’s better than that?” said White.

The meetings start after school at 2:30 p.m., but when it comes to time constraints, Mayorga said, “We lose track of time all the time, we could talk for hours.”

The theme for the month of September is mystery, and the next meeting will be on Oct. 4 after school at 2:30 p.m.

“I can’t wait to see what everyone is talking about. Mystery is such an unpredictable genre,” Fwamini said.
