School uniforms: Should we enforce this rule?

From the perfect ties and polished shoes to the hoodies, sneakers and wild hair, schools around the world continue to debate whether uniforms should be required or if students should be allowed to choose their own attire. Some believe that uniforms help prevent bullying and encourage focus on school rather than fashion. However, others argue that controlling how students dress stifles creativity and restricts personal freedom.

FVHS is filled with many unique and different people and personalities. Many students express themselves through their creative outlets, interests and of course, their choice of clothing. Several students shared their thoughts about the topic; the majority of them shared that integrating uniforms doesn’t have significant benefits or immense advantages.

“I don’t believe they should [have uniforms] because I feel like each student should have the freedom to express themselves,” said freshman Shannel Mejia-Velez.

Another concern brought to light is how uniforms not only limit personal expression but also identities.

“I know that certain people who identify themselves differently wouldn’t want to be forced into clothing based on stereotypes or social expectations,” said freshman Mary Travers. She went on to explain that uniform policies require particular clothing based on gender, which may not align with how every student identifies.

While students voiced their concerns about how uniforms restrict individuality and freedom of expression, supporters of school uniforms argue that they could provide benefits to students. They pointed out that enforcing a school uniform policy can create a sense of community, put focus on schoolwork and help prevent bullying.

When students wear the same clothes as their peers every day, it levels the playing field, outs the inequalities and reduces expectations from social pressure to dress a certain way. By creating a more homogenous environment, students from all socioeconomic backgrounds can feel included, as uniforms foster a sense of belonging and may even raise school spirit. Many also say that uniforms reduce the chances of students feeling insecure or less confident; a lack of confidence could be a significant learning barrier and cause their focus to drift from school and towards following fashion trends or the latest styles of clothing instead.

Concord Lake Steam Academy explains, “School spirit is the sense of pride and cohesive identity felt by members of a particular school, and it’s important because it helps to bring people together in a positive way.”

In conclusion, the controversy between uniforms and no uniforms each have their own pros and cons, and the opinions on whether or not to enforce these polices vary. Some districts and schools (mostly private) have taken it upon themselves to implement the uniform policy, but many others have yet to decide.
