Our FVHS basketball program has had a great start to their season. Our womens team has a record of 6-3 and our mens team stands at 8-3.

Senior Beckett Coon leads the team in points per game, averaging 18.7. He also leads the team in total points throughout the season at 168.

Junior Abby Meaney and senior Reagan Lindholm lead the team in multiple categories, including points per game, assists per game and three-point percentage.

Coon, Meaney, and Lindholm are all having outstanding seasons and are ranked in various categories on MaxPreps.

Coon is ranked first in NC Division 7A, first in Greater Neuse River 7A, and fifth in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association for three-pointers made, currently totaled at 27.

He is also ranked fourth in Greater Neuse River 7A for points per game. Lastly, he is first in Greater Neuse River 7A and second in NC Division 7A for field goals made; he currently sits at 59.

“It shows that people see what you’re doing. I’m going to keep working and let my work show,” said Coon.

The Bengals have had a couple of nail-biting games including their most recent against Middle Creek High School, which they won 48-40. It’s important to keep their composure and stay focused. Coon likes to stay monotone when encouraging his teammates to help them keep calm.

“Playing the right way and getting the right shot is important,” said Coon. “If you’re open, shoot it and if not, get other people involved.”

Lindholm is ranked fifth in Greater Neuse River 7A for charges per game, third for field goals made, fifth for points per game, sixth assists per game and eighth in steals per game. Additionally, she is ranked seventh in North Carolina, second in NC Division 7A, and first in GNRC 7A and second in the NCHSSA for three-pointers made.

“The key to being a leader is staying consistent. Your teammates won’t always like leadership but it pays off in the end,” said Lindholm.

Our womens team has had a plethora of blowout wins against teams like Athens Drive, Enloe and Harnett Central.

However, it is important that they keep looking forward and continue to have enough perseverance to improve even more throughout the season.

Meaney is third in GNRC 7A for three-pointers made, sixth in NC Division 7A and first in GRNC 7A for assists per game. She is also fourth in field goals made and eighth in points per game.

“I plan to keep working and developing my skills, especially in the off-season. I want to improve for next year,” said Meaney.

As their seasons continue, both teams have a lot to look forward to and prepare for. Make sure to come support our Bengals as they face Cleveland High School at home on Dec. 19. Our womens team will start at 6:15 p.m. and our mens team will follow at 7:30.
