Our FVHS swim team had a solid performance at their first match held at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. Our womens team placed second overall, and our men’s team placed third.

Our Bengals placed first in five out of 24 events and second in eight out of 24 events. Some of those events include the 50 free (womens and mens), women’s 100 free, and mens 200 free relay.

“Our goal is not only to make conference but to place better in it too,” said senior Samantha Williams.

Williams placed fourth in both the 200 and 500 free.

Sophomore Nelia Roberge participated in the 50 free. It is also her first year being a part of the FVHS swim team.

Most people see swimming only as a fun activity that you do in the summer; however, they don’t understand the difficulty of it as a sport.

According to ActiveSG Circle, swimming is one of the only sports that uses every muscle group in your body and has many benefits on top of that. Some include improved breathing, better posture and improved muscle endurance and strength.

“The hardest part of swimming people don’t realize is the fact that your mindset will majorly affect how you do in the meet,” said Roberge. “If you have a negative mindset on your dive or your flip turn, you will do badly at those things.”

Roberge and our swim team as a whole are continuing to work hard and improve as much as they can. With their solid performance, the Bengals are motivated after their November meeting and are working hard to prepare for whatever competition comes next.

“I’m excited for all the meets to come and gain more knowledge and confidence in the sport,” said Roberge.

Make sure to come support your Bengals at their next meet, Jan. 14 at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center at 6 p.m.
