After lots of hard work, dedication and long hours, our FVHS football team’s season is officially over. The Bengals lost to Cardinal Gibbons High School on Nov. 14, which i s ranked No. 1 in the class 7A division, with the final score being 52-8.
The Bengals’ only scoring play was a touchdown off of a blocked field goal attempt at the end of the second quarter.
They ended the season with an overall record of 5-7 and a conference record of 1-5, which got them to sixth place. The Bengals had lots of tough conference competition, pushing them to play harder and improve week after week. Their conference had four teams ranked in the top 10 in the 7A division in NC.
The Bengals had a strong start to the season winning three of their first four games, but they endured some difficult defeats throughout the rest of it.
“We were able to bounce back from some tough losses from tough teams, so I’m pretty proud of that,” said senior guard and center, Tavares Robinson.
For a lot of our Bengals, this was their final high school football season. Even though it ended in an unfortunate way, there are still lots of accomplishments to look back on.
“I’ve been playing since I was eight, so it’s really hard to say goodbye,” said senior free safety Corbin Peacock.
However, this loss has not discouraged our Bengals. Our returning players and coaches are already thinking about next season. There were lots of younger players this season, and head coach Jeb Hall, along with the assistant coaches, are planning on training these young players to get better over the course of the off season so they will be ready next fall.
“Our priorities are getting everyone bigger, faster, and stronger in the weight room and building team relationships,” said Hall. “We have to get better at everything overall, every aspect of the game.”
As the seniors say goodbye and the season comes to an end, the team looks ahead with hope and excitement for what next year will bring.
“I will definitely remember all the friends that I made and all the changes in my life that the sport has brought me,” said Robinson.
