100-year-old heritage bell will be in attendance at historical FVHS football game

The Heritage Bell game will be a new tradition between cross-town rivals FVHS and Willow Spring High School. The Bell will be at the stadium during the upcoming football game and will have the final score of this game engraved into the bell.

“The winning school during the varsity football game against Willow Spring High School and FVHS will decorate the base that holds the bell of their school colors and will hold the bell until the following year’s game,” said FVHS athletic director James Mountford.

Even though this new tradition is new to FVHS, it all started over 100 years ago in Durham and Chapel Hill.

UNC and Duke have participated in a tradition that dates back to the late 1800s. Every year, one football game determines who gets to hold the almighty victory bell for a single season.

This tradition has given college football fans one massive rivalry game to look forward to every season.

Like Duke and Chapel Hill, FVHS has a deep history with the Heritage Bell.

In 1918 a school bell was once used at Fuquay Springs High School. This school bell provided the whole town with a way to keep time during every school day.

Even after electronic bells were put in the school, a steel frame was built for the bell during the late 1970s to acknowledge the impact this school bell had on hundreds of previous students and teachers.

With FVHS having a tough season, Willow Springs High School has a chance to win against their cross-town rival.

“I am confident that the Bengals will win 21-14,” Mountford stated.

Even though the Bengals are 1-5, this game is crucial for playoff contention and local bragging rights.

This game will be held Oct. 27, 2023 under the Friday Night Lights at FVHS.
