Almost everyone has a hobby, at least one thing they love doing in their free time or something they just do every once in a while because they find it fun. However, what are some of these hobbies that people have, and how much time do they spend doing them? Now, sometimes people might wonder, ¨Do hobbies affect my happiness in a positive way, and should I really spend my time on hobbies?¨
According to Harvard Health, “Compared with people who didn’t have hobbies, those who did reported better health, more happiness, fewer symptoms of depression and higher life satisfaction. The findings were similar across all countries.”
What kind of hobbies do FVHS students have? Answers varied from basketball, crocheting, going to the gym, but all of those interviewed mentioned they played video games in their spare time, one of them explaining that they played video games religiously and spent most of their time doing it.
“I watch shows, I play video games and I study nursing in my free time as well because I want to be a nurse. I spend two to three hours studying nursing sometimes and sometimes up to five hours a day playing video games almost every day of the week,” said sophomore Nolan Williams.
Some people also consider certain hobbies ‘fake‘ such as unproductive hobbies like video games. People think it’s a waste of time instead of a hobby; although, anything can be a hobby as given by the definition of the word: an activity done regularly in one’s leisure time for pleasure.
This all shows that hobbies are beneficial in the end. Everyone’s hobbies are different, and for many, the discovery of activities they can do in their leisure time is important for self growth and happiness.
