Between media companies like Disney, Netflix and Amazon Prime, competition within the entertainment world has never been stronger. So when Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) went up for sale, many were left wondering which company would be first to buy it. In the end, Paramount made the move, purchasing WBD in a significant $110 billion deal that would not only push the company into the top tier of global entertainment but also set it up to compete more directly with some of the biggest names in streaming.

Paramount has come out to state that this merger will enable them to become a “next-generation media powerhouse,” effectively cementing their place on the world stage next to the rest of the media giants. By combining the two companies’ studios, streaming platforms and creative teams, Paramount hopes to increase its influence in both film and television. While the company still isn’t as large a media conglomerate as Disney, this deal gives Paramount a much stronger position in the industry and more room to expand their reach.

According to David Ellison, Chairman and CEO of Paramount, “By bringing together these world-class studios, our complementary streaming platforms, and the extraordinary talent behind them, we will create even greater value for audiences, partners and shareholders, and we couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.”

Warner Bros. brings a long list of movie franchises with it, wIth major titles like “Harry Potter,” the DC Universe, “The Conjuring” and more now falling under Paramount’s ownership. This will allow the company to drastically expand their media library on top of enabling greater movie production rates with the acquisition of new studios and workers.

However, the significance of this purchase goes beyond the ownership of a couple of movie studios; Paramount now has ownership over the various stations and productions that Warner Bros. was the parent company of, including CNN, HGTV and the Cartoon Network. But what does new ownership mean exactly? Will a new parent company change what’s being shown and reported on screen?

Well, the short answer is yes, change is almost guaranteed. Large merges such as this one more often than not lead to significant layoffs, which will occur as the subsidiaries of Warner Bros. undergo significant structural and operational changes. With new ownership comes new priorities, and news channels like CNN will likely experience shifts in content covered as well as differences in editorial style, something viewers should keep in mind.

This deal marks a major turning point in the world of media, and whether it leads to better content quality, more censorship in news media or (most likely) a combination of the two is something audiences will have to watch out for in the months ahead.
