A lot of people use social media everyday. TikTok has a big influence on a lot of people today in addition to other social media platforms. According to the National Library Of Medicine, “There is broad agreement among the scientific community that social media has the potential to both benefit and harm children and adolescents.”
There is misinformation spread throughout social media, and it impacts the way many people think. While most of it is misproven by simply doing research on the topic briefly, some people may choose not to.
“Most people just lie to get titles and views, but you never know if it’s real. You have to check to make sure most of it is real,” said sophomore Yaritza Zelaya Perez.
Screentime is a big factor in the lives of those that use social media. Typically, people can have upwards of eight hours per day, especially teenagers. The bad side effects of constantly being on your phone all day can include eye strain, severe neck or back pain and the adverse effects that come with blue light from phone screens, which all come together to disrupt sleep.
“I usually have eight hours a day of screentime on my phone when I have school. Usually when I’m at home by myself I usually have 12 hours a day of screentime or more,” said Perez.
Social media also tends to be a big factor in someone’s personality, depending on how much they use social media and surround themselves with it.
According to the National Institutes Of Health, “Instagram users had a higher neuroticism state and a higher need for uniqueness compared with the controls.”
In conclusion this shows social media can shape society and how people think and spend time. It can also affect how people sleep, act and most of the time, some people’s entire lives.
