Music is as old as humanity itself, with evidence of musical instruments (such as bone and ivory flutes) dating back 40,000 to 43,000 years ago. Today, music remains as popular as ever, especially among teens and youth. According to many studies, music has been shown to improve human bonding, serve as a method of communication and is even a helpful method in regulating mood.
For much of the younger generation, including students and adolescents, music can help regulate their emotions and mental health during times of high emotional intensity. It can also stimulate brain development, help manage stress and complex emotions and foster creativity.

In the digitalized world we’re living in, most people listen to music online with streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music Unlimited.

According to the RIAA in a 2025 study, “Streaming continued to dominate with $4.68B in revenues, accounting for 84% of the market.”

Digital streaming services have gained popularity due to their convenience, where people can now hear a chosen song almost instantly rather than being limited to just a single song or album. This increase in convenience has allowed more and more users to expand their musical palettes, find new artists and listen to music more frequently.

The most popular types of music for young people in 2026 reflect the diverse cultures, identities and creative styles of our generation, including genres such as pop, hip-hop, EDM, Latin music and K-pop.

Genres like pop and hip-hop have remained popular for many decades due to their thought-provoking lyrics and upbeat melodies. Meanwhile, genres such as EDM have gained popularity in recent years with new developments in technology, which have allowed the creation of futuristic tracks with high-energy songs often used at gatherings such as parties and festivals. Music such as K-pop and Latin music has also gained popularity throughout the world in recent years, and despite differences in cultures, they have continued to top international charts. These songs often display a catchy rhythm and creative visuals, such as dances and music videos.
According to Spotify, as of 2025 and early 2026, Bad Bunny remains Spotify’s global top artist, after also claiming the title in 2020, 2021 and 2022. He is followed by Taylor Swift (second place globally, first in the U.S.), The Weeknd, Drake and Billie Eilish.

New uprising artists have also remained popular, such as Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, KATSEYE and somber.

Teen Pop Hits from Apple Music contains many popular releases from the past few years, such as “Gabriela” by KATSEYE, “Tears For Fun” by Griff, “back to friends” by somber and “Opalite” by Taylor Swift.

Concerts have also become a popular way for young people to listen to music and are a great way to connect with others. Live music fosters a sense of community, lowers stress hormones and helps create memorable experiences. Many popular artists are planning on touring in NC in 2026, such as Megan Trainor, Guns N’ Roses, Cardi B and Zara Larsson. There are many websites to show if your favorite artist is planning to tour, such as Google, Ticket Master and Live Nation

Music is likely to continue playing a significant role in society in the future and foster a positive sense of community in creative spaces. Music allows people to interact with different cultures and experiences and explore new ideas. It will likely change in the future as society does and we can anticipate new genres and songs to shake things up in the future.
