FVHS’s Student Council has recently selected new members for their team. They accept new members at the start of every year with an application link on the school website, flyers, and Instagram. Now don’t feel like it’s too late. Student Council is going to do midyear elections to give their current council a chance to drop out if they don’t want to participate anymore, but also as a way for new students to join.

The Student Council, consisting of 37 devoted members, plays an important role in enhancing the student experience at FVHS. But how do students become a part of this crucial group?

The Student Council seeks students with qualities such as leadership, communication, and enthusiasm for making their school better.

According to their advisor Shannon O’Brien, “The students who applied were asked simple questions such as what clubs they’re a part of, and what kind of things they want to see FVHS bring to the student body. It was just a conversation to kind of get to know each other. We went over that we meet every Monday and form committees for planning major events.”

One key focus for the Student Council is to ensure that students know they were the ones who planned the events. “Student Council Presents” is their motto, and they aim to make it known far and wide.

Junior Emily Fairbairn, the Student Council President, is excited about the various events they organize.

“Overall I like Powderpuff the most just because I’ve had a lot of fun with it. I participate in the Student Council because I want people to have fun at school. I find it very stressful being at school typically with all the classes. I just want time in between where it’s just fun for people to do small things like spirit weeks or big things like dances. I’ve tried to have more fun with it, more leniency, so everybody’s getting a voice, and it’s not just seniors speaking or juniors speaking. We have sophomores who are leading committees now, and freshmen who are coming in for interviews where they have ideas they want to implement,” said Fairbairn.

Junior Emersyn Davis, the Student Council Vice President, echoes the sentiment of connecting with peers and the school through their work.

“Senior Sunrise was really good. We had a lot more people come than RSVP’d. We have a lot of people who are engaging more in the spirit days throughout the school than we did in my freshman year. I’ve been doing Student Council since sixth grade so I find it a very good way to connect with people and to connect with your school. It’s a very fun environment. You get to meet a lot of people. I think leading the committee is really fun and you learn a lot through what you do there. I’ve enjoyed seeing something start from the beginning into the final product,” said Davis.

With a diverse range of events, including the Sneakerball, Homecoming, and Spirit Weeks, the FVHS Student Council is dedicated to creating memorable experiences and promoting a sense of unity among students. As they continue to grow, their mission remains clear: to make the school a better place and ensure that every student’s voice is heard.
