FVHS Black Student Union is hosting a spirit week for Black History Month on Feb. 9 to 13. Monday is Black Music where people represent their favorite Black artists. Tuesday is the Pan African Flag, so wear red, yellow, and green. Wednesday is Black Excellence where people should wear clothes representing Black celebrities. Thursday is Rep Da Culture and means wearing traditional clothing. Friday is Black Out where everyone wears black.

Freshman Aryannah Butler said, “It’s very important to the school to bring awareness and appreciate my ancestors and the students here.”

FVHS will host the Black Excellence Showcase March 6, at 6:00 p.m.  There will be vendors, live performances and engagement opportunities for the community. This event is open for everyone to enjoy.

Butler said, “Bringing attention to the past helps us reconnect in the future. It helps us not have a racist mask and think of ourselves as equals.”

People are also going over the announcements to talk about Black History. The BSU adviser, Andreas Jordan is really excited about the events.

“Hosting the BHM Spirit Week is important because it provides the opportunity to honor Black history, culture, and influence and allows fellow students to actively engage and learn! The Black Excellence Showcase allows students as well as the community to see positive examples of Black leadership, achievement, and cultural pride,” said Jordan.

He shared flyers with the staff so they could tell students about the spirit week and showcase. He hopes the event strengthens the community and promotes Black history in the school and community.

Butler said, “Overall really, it’s important to focus on the struggles of people back then. Even today we still manage to overcome any hardship thrown at us. The smaller hiccups [are] like the kinks in our crowns, and that’s beautiful really and it should be appreciated.”
