Students at FVHS are getting ready for a new change in their daily schedule. Starting next year, the school will be getting rid of A and B lunch shifts. Instead, every student will have lunch everyday at the same time for one full hour.

Sophomore Kylie White said, “I would rather have smart lunch so I won’t have to worry about if me and my friends will get the same lunch. Now it’s guaranteed that I will have lunch with them, plus more time.”

This new plan is called smart lunch. There will be an app to track where students are supposed to be. While having a longer break sounds like more free time, it comes with new rules. The hour is split into two 30 minute halves. During one half, students will be eating and socializing. During the other half, they must participate in an activity.

In the past, students were split up, and half the school stayed in class while the others ate. Now, the whole school will be on break together. Since clubs will now meet during the school day, everyone has a chance to join one while more clubs are being created as well. This change is meant to help students who are busy after school with sports or jobs and help with students that don’t have transportation after school. Each teacher will also offer tutoring two times a week. Students who aren’t passing some classes could be assigned tutoring by their teachers. Administrators believe this will help grades go up. It gives every student a built-in time to talk to teachers without staying late.

Sophomore Sage Dawe said, “I think having smart lunch next semester is a good idea because people that are behind on their work or don’t have a lot of time to do their homework will get more done and also have an opportunity to do clubs during school instead of after school, which I think is more impactful for all the students in the school.”

Many students are excited to finally have the same lunch time as all of their friends. However, some are worried the cafeteria will be very crowded since everyone is eating at once. To help with this, the school allows students to eat in other areas like the courtyard, media center or certain classrooms.
