The Student Council held an interest meeting May 5, in room 3208 for those interested in leading in school events. Recently the Student Council led events like Popsicles at the end of April and VolleyBros. They encourage students who want to be involved with the school community or want to increase school spirit to join in. Additionally, they are holding elections for next year’s council leaders. Voting started May 7 and will end May 8 at 8 p.m. Students can vote with the email they were sent on Outlook.
Freshmen Micah-Faith Villanueva, Caroline Simpson and Tucker Crocker are running for Sophomore Class President.
“I wanna make sure everyone’s voice is heard and everyone gets a chance to speak. I want to make people feel comfortable and supported,” said Villanueva.
Sophomore Loza Bitew and junior Chloe Ellerbee are running for Vice President of the executive board, which is over the whole council. Juniors Ansley Scherpereel and Beth Ann Giordano also are running for Vice President.
Bitew said, “I love helping the school community and just being involved. I’ve grown a lot personally and developed relationships with others.”
Elerbee has been in Student Council since the middle of freshman year. This was Bitew’s first year in student council.
Ellerbee said, “I want to be able to combine ideas with others and make our school a better place where all voices can be heard.”
Sophomore Morgan Lilly is running for Junior Class Secretary. She enjoys Student Council because of leadership opportunities. Even though this will be her first year in Student Council, she is excited.
Lilly said, “I think they do a lot of planning for the school and they want to bring more people together and have more school spirit.”
Students who hope to get elected have put up flyers to encourage voters. Some have fun designs or puns to encourage voters.
Sophomore Abhijeet Gorella said, “Since I’ve been in [Student Council] for the past two years, I really enjoy planning it, and I’ll keep coming up with new ideas… I definitely will try to increase participation because this year we weren’t really able to get a lot of participants and a lot of people would not participate or not attend meetings. So we couldn’t get enough manpower that we needed to get the event started.”
Gorella and sophomore Anabelle Barbeau are running for Junior Class President. Both enjoy planning and want to raise school morale.
Barbeau said, “I plan to make more events. Our school spirit has been depleting, so I want to raise it.”
The Student Council plans the events for the school which is one of the things Ellerbee enjoys doing. They helped decorate the school and are working on teacher appreciation and the upcoming senior events.
Students want their voice to be heard and that is why the Student Council exists. All campaigners hope to help their students and plan fun events to get the school together.
