A ritual is a special act that a person does the same way every time. Athletes think these acts help them play better. Many players like to eat the same meal before they go to the field. Each player prefers something different, but eating the same food makes their bodies feel familiar and ready. They do not want to try new things right before they compete; they like to feel ready to perform.
Listening to music is another popular way to get ready. Some players put on headphones to block out the noise. They listen to fast songs that get them pumped and ready to play. Other players pick quiet music to help them stay calm. Music helps the mind focus on the goal. It keeps the player from feeling too nervous about the crowd.
It’s interesting what FVHS athletes do to get them ready. Some players may listen to rock music, while the captain of the softball team, Bella Peacock, has a very special way to get ready for her games. She does not just put on her glove and run to the field. She likes to find a quiet spot to say a prayer first. Peacock says that when she prays, it cools her mind and helps her focus on playing her best. She told me that talking to God makes her feel like she is not alone out there on the field.
Justin Odom is a junior on the football team who has a very strict routine before he steps onto the field. He has to put on his AirPods and listen to Playboi Carti to get his energy up. While the music plays, he always puts his shoes on in a certain order by starting with the left foot and then the right foot. Odom says that if he does not do his shoes this way, he feels off and cannot play as well. He believes following this order helps him feel like everything is going to go right during the game.
Whether they are praying or listening to rap music, these rituals give players the confidence they need to go out and win.
