Does the book always hold up against the movie adaptation? This has been an ongoing debate since movies were first created. Books are better than movies because they allow us to use our imagination, whereas a movie provides someone else’s visualization/interpretation of a story, shows visuals and is faster paced than reading books.
The positive aspect of reading is that it helps us develop very important skills, such as improvement in comprehension and vocabulary that we need everyday to survive. Books allow you to relax; remember the last time you read a book at night? Did it help you sleep better? The answer is probably yes. Books have a calming effect on you, especially at night. They are informative, often introducing us to new ideas, stories and perspectives that help us grow. Sometimes, reading certain books can help you find solutions to your problems that are shown in the book. Another positive thing about reading a fictional book is that the story will take you to new worlds or universes where you forget your problems. Additionally, since reading increases your vocabulary, the more you read, the better you get at writing.
There may be negative aspects of reading, such as, when you start a book and you forget to finish it. You may feel tired every time you read, especially if you do so before sleeping. It can also get annoying holding the book for a very long time. However, this pain is short lived once you discover all of the worlds and universes that can be found in books.
In the end, movies are not all bad. They bring stories to life, and they can have many of the same characteristics as the books they hail from.
According to the Harvard Crimson, movies bring entertainment, educate us and shape us. They have also become a way to spread information. Movies can be an incredibly effective tool to educate society and our culture. And movie theaters only add to the experience.
When you go in and smell the popcorn, see the dim lights and watch the movie, it just brings a thrilling experience to us. However, when you’re watching a movie, your brain is in a relaxed, passive state, and your imagination isn’t as engaged as it would be while reading books.
So which is better? As a whole, the action of reading a book is better than watching a movie. From a more scientific perspective, reading a book uses a very large number of brain areas and watching a film engages relatively few.
Junior Joshita Vardapati said, “I think they [books] help you understand the story better, and it improves your creativity and reading skills.”
Watching movies may be preferred by some, but reading is the best option for all because it helps develop comprehension, vocabulary and prompts one’s imagination.
