Social media is mostly used by teens to connect with others, post photos, make funny videos and to make dance videos. It’s also where others can respond to content that teens post, if they have their comments on.
Social media is a big part of a lot of teenagers’ lives. The healthy part of social media is that teens get to create online identities and chat with each other. This provides some social support for teens who lack social support or are lonely and are going through a stressful time.
The unhealthy part of social media is that teens can be distracted from doing homework, exercising and participating in family activities, on top of messing up their sleep schedules. Another unhealthy part of social media is the sharing of too much personal information, which risks exposure of teens to online predators who might try to exploit or extort them. There was a study conducted by focusing on children aged 12 to 15 years old in the United States spending three hours a day online. It was found that this behavior was linked to a higher risk of mental health concerns.
However, not all research has found a link between time spent on social media and mental health risk in teens. A way to protect teens from this is to set rules or limits as needed. This helps prevent social media from getting in the way of activities which can keep your teen from sharing too much of their personal information or data that they didn’t mean to share. Encourage face-to-face contact with friends instead of online so that they don’t suffer from social anxiety.
I believe that social media is good when you are bored, but at the same time, there should be a limit on the amount of time on it so that it doesn’t affect your personal or offline life.
