The problem with decorating for Christmas in November

Once Halloween ends, some people seem to immediately get antsy to start celebrating Christmas. Stores start selling Santa hats and candy canes, and families begin to decorate their properties with colorful lights. It makes one wonder, why not just wait until December to decorate?

Some would argue that decorating for Christmas in November is completely unnecessary. The leaves outside are still on the trees, and it reaches up to 70 degrees in the afternoons; it doesn’t feel like the typical festive environment at all. If it still feels like autumn outside, maybe enjoying the season makes more sense than trying to delusionally believe it feels like ‘a cold winter’s night.’

“I think it’s nice,” said senior Rein Petitt, “I think maybe a fourth or halfway [through November] is acceptable to decorate for Christmas.”

On the other hand, some people find that having Christmas to look forward to really helps them get through the busy season. For students and staff alike, the weeks leading up to winter break are always chaotic and stressful. Being able to go home and find comfort in Christmas cheer could really be a great way to cope. Holiday stress can start in November, so it is completely in one’s right to romanticise a future with peace.

` Decorating for Christmas in November isn’t that bad, it’s just a personal preference that seems to be slightly unrealistic in an inconsequential way. While feeling a longing for a break is very human, I think that if you take time to enjoy the month of November separately from the winter holidays, you will find that there are unique things about the end of fall that make the season special.
