The importance of arts programs in schools has been argued for decades. Whether or not certain programs should receive more funding or be cut is a struggle in schools around the globe. But the fact of the matter is that the arts can bring communities together in ways nothing else can.

Performing arts shows the ability to convey someone else’s story as if it were your own.

“I do performing arts, singing, and acting. Acting allows me to express myself by putting myself into the characters and channelling their personalities into my own,” said junior Alyx Tidwell.

Another important aspect of theatre is the set. The way a set is built can determine how the show comes together.

“I like doing technical theatre because I am able to express my feelings through the stability of my set pieces,” said senior Evelyn Parker.

On the other hand, being in a band is another way for students to express their feelings through music.

“I love being able to use my instrument as a filter to portray emotions to other people. I think it’s important because music is such a huge part of our lives and is always around and influencing our emotions and ideas,” said sophomore Jade Orr.

An important issue is the lack of funding for these programs. Each person interviewed agrees that arts programs need more funding in order to improve the quality and to be able to support more students.

There are other challenges with these programs that students have to face on top of academic work.

“Something that’s hard about choral singing is the constant self-doubt, and the acting business is so hard to get into,” said Tidwell.

Orr agreed saying, “The most difficult thing for me is being patient and knowing I’ll only get better with time and repetition.”

However, overcoming these challenges and creating an end result that you are proud of is something everyone enjoys.

“The arts are important because they show the beauty of storytelling and expression,” said Parker.

Arts programs allow students to create products and memories they will remember across their lifetime. It’s important to keep these programs funded and flourishing for future generations.
