For centuries Halloween costumes were used to ward off bad spirits, but now in today’s society we use them to be expressive. Halloween is the one day where people get to come together while dressing up and cosplaying as different characters. Many adults also participate in this holiday, but rather than dressing up as scary characters, they usually dress in cute, silly or even revealing costumes. But some people think it ruins the point of Halloween.

Many popular outfits that adults, specifically women, choose to dress up in are careers that mimic occupations like police officers, firefighters, nurses, and animals like black cats, deer and cheetahs. One reason for that could be that some people don’t have interests in horror movies or horror characters, but still want to participate by dressing up in their own creative way. This can still be a great way to still have fun on Halloween as an adult or even match with a friend.

“Halloween costumes can include more genres and be more inclusive even for older people,” said junior Chloe Ellerbee.

A lot of children and teens who also participate may be scared or uninterested in dressing up as scary characters. Most younger children and teens would rather dress up as something silly or more age appropriate like TV characters, video game characters, animals and even DIY options where you can create your own costumes with any chosen materials.

“Me and my friends dressed up as our favorite video game characters and it was just as fun as it would have been if we dressed up scary,” said junior Isabella Del Signore.

However, many suggest that the whole point of Halloween is the fright.

“The best part of halloween is the scariness, it’s what makes Halloween, ‘Halloween,” said junior Eliana Rosado.

Although some people think that Halloween should be scary, everyone should have the choice to dress up in their own fun. So whether you’re dressing up scary, silly, or revealing, all that should matter is the fun time you have with your friends, family or just by yourself.
