The Fuquay-Varina High School womens golf team has done it again, winning its third consecutive conference championship at Bentwinds Country Club. Dominating the course and making history, the Lady Bengals proved that teamwork, focus, and mental toughness are just as important as skill.
Team members attribute their success to collaboration and mindset. Junior Lydia Feldner reflected on her own growth this season, explaining how focusing on her mental game helped her stay calm and consistent during matches.
“Everyone working together and having the right mindset makes this team successful,” said Feldner.
Freshman Caroline Simpson has quickly made her mark on the team as well. She shared that being part of the Bengals has pushed her to grow as a player and as a teammate.
“Since I was a freshman on the team, I was proud to be one of the best on the team and make it to Regionals,” said Simpson.
She highlighted that golf doesn’t only require skill, but also a strong mental game.
“It’s 90% mental, 10% skill. You could be the best player, but a bad attitude can ruin your game,” said Simpson.
Sophomore Payton Brewer agreed, noting that patience and positivity are crucial for success. She explained that supporting teammates while managing individual performance is crucial to maintaining a strong team.
“Golf can be tough mentally. One bad day can affect your momentum, so staying positive and supporting your teammates is key,” said Brewer.
The Lady Bengals qualified for Regionals. Caroline Simpson was one of the players who had the best turnout for the team. Although the results of Regionals were disappointing, they are ready for next year to be conference champions for the fourth time and keep the streak alive.
