Pinterest is an app that allows users to discover and sort their creative ideas, ultimately leading to more motivation and improved mental health. I really like this app because it seems to be more encouraging of creativity than other social media apps, which in a world that relies on the internet, is a very important message.
For artists, it’s important to be able to find inspiration. Inspiration can come from going out and experiencing the world, but for young artists it can be harder to go out. This is where Pinterest can be helpful, as it allows them to find that inspiration in a more accessible way.
Kiki Quinteros is a senior and visual arts student at FVHS, and frequently uses Pinterest to help find inspiration for her artworks.
“I personally love it. It’s the best social media platform to get the prettiest pictures, be it for a project or just for personal use,” said Quinteros. “I love using it to find obscure artworks, which are harder to find on Google since [it] tends to be more general and mainstream.”
While Pinterest can be great to get some quick inspiration, many argue that it’s become so overfilled with advertisements and AI art that it makes it harder to navigate. While Pinterest has seen an increase in advertisements and AI on its feeds, it does offer the option to turn it off, which is uncommon on other apps such as Instagram or TikTok.
Social media is like the wild west, sometimes it’s great and you get to see amazing things, while other times it could ruin your whole month. For this reason, having good boundaries with yourself about when you have time to explore the internet is important. My suggestion is to get off apps that are specifically engineered to keep you addicted, and focus on apps that inspire creativity and growth instead.
