There are several fun holidays in September. They range from important events in history to fun little international days. Sept. 5 is Teachers Day, Sept. 7 is World Beard Day and World Suicide Day is Sept. 10. Constitution Day is Sept. 17 and you can celebrate by registering to vote. Sept. 19 is International Talk Like A Pirate Day.
Ipsitha Karnam said, “Hindi Diwas is celebrated on Sept. 14 and it marks the day in 1949 when Hindi was adopted as one of the official languages of India.”
What you do to celebrate is read or perform Hindi poems and literature. You celebrate the culture of the language.
Karnam explained not everyone celebrates Hindi Diwas because there are many different languages in India.
“For me, it’s more about acknowledging the cultural importance and maybe sharing something about Hindi with friends who aren’t familiar with it, or learning a sentence in Hindi to tell my Hindi friends.” There are over 122 major languages in India, including Telugu and Tamil which Karnam can speak.
There is also Alzheimer’s Day on Sept. 21 and International Day of Sign is Sept.23. International Day of Sign celebrates all the different sign languages around the world. You can celebrate by learning ASL. International Literacy Day and Day of Deaf are both Sept. 26. National Pet Bird Day is Sept. 30, so you can celebrate your pet parrot or go bird watching.
International Literacy Day celebrates the ability to learn to read and write.
English teacher Marshall Wortham said, “Literacy is surrounding yourself with words. It doesn’t have to be classic literature; it can be magazines, newspapers, or even blog posts. Surrounding yourself with words is the cornerstone of literacy.” He explained it’s a lifelong skill that can increase your knowledge.
Wortham wants his students to enjoy reading.
“By the time a student is in high school, students either enjoy reading or don’t. Some students have lost their love of learning because of an evil English teacher along the way. My job is to project my love of literature and maybe it’ll show them that reading isn’t so bad after all,” Wortham said.
There are many important days in September, and there are a few fun ones too. Maybe you’ll celebrate Teachers Day by giving your teachers a gift, or you can celebrate Talk Like A Pirate Day by talking like a pirate.
