Wake County currently has over 200 teaching positions available, causing existing teachers to have rooms of 30 students to themselves. With the new school year beginning, Fuquay-Varina High School has gained a few educators.
New science teacher, Alice Selim, has been teaching for 24 years before joining FVHS. She’s passionate about her work, loves helping people and believes in positive reinforcement. Selim is excited to teach anatomy for the first time and make students feel like science is relevant to them and their health.
Selim said, “The environment is very welcoming. The students are polite and hard-working. I feel like I’m appreciated, and I’m at home.”
History teacher David Kushner has joined the FVHS staff this year as well. Kushner has been teaching English for 22 years prior and has been coaching our mens JV basketball team since last year.
“I’ve lived in Fuquay for 13 years, and I’ve always loved the town. This school feels like my community school because students here are extremely kind and respectful, and the teachers have been amazingly helpful. The administration has been great, and I really have only positive things to say so far,” said Kushner.
These are just two examples of staff that believe in what they’re doing while making a difference one student at a time.
Kushner said that having a teacher who will always be in your corner is important to a student, and there are many candidates to choose from here at FVHS.
“Keep going no matter what. Everything we experience will help us in the future. If things feel tough, just know that the tide comes in and the tide will go back out again. After rain comes a rainbow,” said Selim.
As our school adjusts to the new school year, let’s remember to welcome all new students and staff with a smile. Roll Bengals!
