With the beginning of the new school year, FVHS’s clubs and organizations are holding their first meetings. Almost all clubs and organizations are open for students to join at any time. Check with advisors for updated meeting information.

To join honor societies you must meet a certain set of requirements unique to each of them, and some are by invitation only. Check with the advisors of these societies for relevant information regarding joining.

Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a club based around classes in the Family and Consumer sciences sector, which looks to improve leadership skills and serve the school and community.

“We host events for the school and community, focus on families and children, volunteer, and compete at state and national events. Leadership skills, public speaking skills, travel, and friendships are some highlights of what our club offers,” said FCCLA advisor Julia McClannon.

FCCLA’s first meeting was on Sept. 4, and the next meeting is on Oct. 2. FCCLA meets from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., in room 2716.

Key Club is a student-led service based organization that seeks to make students better members of society through leadership, character building, caring and inclusiveness.

“Last year, our FVHS Key Club worked with local elementary schools to provide meal kits for local families in need at Thanksgiving—this is just one of several service projects that we complete each year,” said key club advisor Ryan Carolan.

Key Club meets in the media center from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. every first and third Thursday of the month, as long as school is in session.

Student Ambassadors aim to welcome new students into the school, helping them to adapt to their new environment.

“The mission of FVHS Student Ambassadors is to promote a welcoming and engaging school environment, with particular emphasis in helping new students in their transition to FVHS.  Student Ambassadors provide tours for new students and families, in addition to other activities decided each year by the club members,” said advisor Patricia Moore.

Student Ambassadors meet on the last Wednesday of each month. To join, students must fill out an application available at the end of October in the student services office.

TINYabc (This is not your average book club) looks to engage students in in-depth discussions about books within a monthly genre and also has fun activities for students at each meeting.

“TINYabc is a book club that meets monthly to foster a community of readers at FVHS. The club picks a genre theme every month that allows readers to explore larger themes in the books they read. The club has regular book discussions, reading challenges, social time, crafts, and more. The next meeting is October 10,” said club advisor Alison Norris.

Safe Space is a club directed at students who feel they need support for reasons regarding their identity or beliefs and is available to all students.

“Safe Space’s goal is to allow everyone to feel welcome at FVHS, regardless of gender, race, or sexuality. In this club, we believe that everyone deserves acceptance and deserves a safe place to be able to discuss anything without fear of judgment. The next meeting is October 23,” said club advisor Alison Norris.

SkillsUSA is an organization available to students enrolled in FVHS’s masonry class that provides students with opportunities to compete at the regional, state, and national level. SkillsUSA looks to teach students valuable technical skills to create the highest skilled workforce in the world.

SkillsUSA North Carolina’s mission is to empower its members to become world-class workers, leaders, and responsible American citizens.  SkillsUSA improves the quality of our nation’s future skilled workforce through the development of SkillsUSA Framework skills that include personal, workplace, and technical skills grounded in academics,” said club advisor Yarbrough Williams.

Please note that SkillsUSA meetings take place during the school day and are not regularly scheduled.

The Hidden Opponent encourages students and athletes to focus on their mental well-being and to raise awareness about the struggles they encounter with their mental health.

“The Hidden Opponent is an accredited nonprofit and advocacy group dedicated to raising awareness for student-athlete mental health. Through advocacy, education, and support, our goal is to end mental health stigma in sports culture.  Though we focus on athletes, all are welcome to join and learn more about their own mental well-being,” said club advisor Meghan Gannon.

The Hidden Opponent held their first meeting on Sept. 12, and will hold their next meeting on Oct. 17.

Craft Club is a club for students who want to express themselves through art and crafts, they meet once a month to work on a small project.

“Craft Club is a newly established space for anyone who needs a creative outlet after school. Each meeting will focus on a new, simple, project that can be made unique through each individual,” said club advisor Samantha Hinson.

Craft Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month.

This is a small selection of clubs available to students at FVHS. If students wish to start their own club to suit their interests and the interests of others, they can fill out a form available on the school’s website under the Clubs and Organizations page.
