Math should be blue, English should be red

What color do you assign to what subject?

There has been a standing debate on which subject is what color. If there was a folder for each subject, science would be green, history would be yellow, math would be blue, and English would be red.

Often we think of science as green because science focuses on nature or chemicals/toxic substances that we imagine to be green.

History is yellow, where we learn about historic paintings or writings. As years pass by, paper starts to change colors to yellow or brown.

Now, there are many mixed opinions about whether math or English is either the color red or blue.

“I don’t really have a particular reason for math being red. English is red because it is more flowery, and when I think of flowers, I think of roses,” said math teacher Lydia Wyche.

Blue is known as a color of calmness and intelligence; therefore, it goes well with math, where it requires us to be logical and calm to solve problems. English is red because red is the color of courage, love, and passion. There are many characters from books with these characteristics.

English teacher Atticus Hall disagrees, “I dislike math and red is an angry color, so I would make math red. English is purple or blue. If it is purple, I think about British literature and I think about Shakespeare’s plays and drama. Purple is supposed to represent royalty, so that is why it’s purple or blue.”

It’s hard to see the reason why English was blue, but their opinion was reasonable and valid.

Although the debate still seems to be unresolved, we can embrace the different perspectives and respect them. As long as you are using a system of organization that works for you, you can color code your work any way you’d like.
