Teen Council is a community outreach program for 7th-12th graders that helps the Fuquay-Varina Parks and Recreation department. The council also helps teens to participate in community affairs and make an impact on the town.

There are 58 members between the ages of 13-18 on the teen council. The executive board includes President Natalie Todd, a junior at FVHS; Vice President Emmabelle Weaver, a junior at FVHS; and Secretary Lynk Boyd, a student at Vernon Malone College & Career Academy, according to the Fuquay-Varina Board Meeting Agenda Abstract.

Teen Council is an amazing place for teens to come together and meet new people. This is also a great place to get service hours and volunteering that students may need for school clubs and college applications.

The Teen Council is free to join and will meet on the second Monday of each month. The teens will arrive at 6 p.m. at the Community Center located at 820 South Main Street. Meetings can last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

“Recently we went to Lake Norman to get our council chartered. Lake Norman is a place where a bunch of different youth councils in the Wake County area go to share what each council does, the differences and similarities. We also talk about different service opportunities each council has done, and we vote on the best volunteer opportunities,” said Weaver.

To be chartered is similar to joining a bigger group of youth councils. The Fuquay Teen Council was officially chartered when they traveled to Lake Norman in Charlotte.

The council will participate in many events throughout the year such as the annual Fuquay-Varina tree lighting, Celebrate Fuquay-Varina, the annual egg hunt in the spring, annual clothing and food drives, the annual haunted trail in October, holiday cards for nursing homes, charity car washes, Independence Day event, teen art classes, and Teen Day.

“We set up a lot of things for the town like the tree lighting event, and we recently did an easter egg hunt. It is a lot of helping out our community and town,” said Todd.

Being a part of the teen council program is an opportunity for the teens in our town to learn leadership skills and give back to our community.
