We are almost halfway through the FVHS womens varsity soccer season. The Bengals have been 4-1-1 in their last six games and have outscored their opponents 20-3.

The Bengals recently had a huge 9-0 win over South Garner High School, led by junior Leila Utate and junior Molly Shields, who put up her first hat trick of the season.

Shields has scored three goals and has assisted one in her past three matches. As a junior, she is one of the top five goal scorers in the Greater Neuse River Conference.

Starting the season with a 1-3 record, the Bengals have had some ups and downs but persevered through challenging mental obstacles.

“We started off the season a little slow, but we have definitely improved since our first game against Holly Springs,” said sophomore Madison Doss.

The Bengals’ key to improving this season was learning to play together as a team. Strong connections with teammates on the field are one of, if not the most, important parts of any team sport.

“Since we have gotten so close to each other, we can now play and communicate at such a high level while on the field,” said Doss.

The Bengals are currently ranked 79th in the state and will continue to move up in the ranks.

FVHS has some tough upcoming opponents including Garner High School, Cleveland High School, and Willow Springs High School. All three teams are in the top five in the conference and are expected to be upcoming playoff teams.

The Bengals must play clean and have a strong mental game to beat these tough conference opponents.

FVHS will play at home against Southeast Raleigh High School on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.
