The controversies surrounding the Grammy Awards and whether the winners deserved their awards continued after the announcement of the winners of 94 categories in addition to the newly added awards on Feb. 4, 2023.
The category that brought the most attention was the Album of the Year which was awarded to Taylor Swift with the album “Midnights.” On the other hand, the category with the undesirable attention went to the rap category.
Rapper Killer Mike won the category for the best rap song and performance for his song “Scientists & Engineers,” as well as the best rap album for “Michael.” Therefore, Mike won all of the categories he was nominated for.
The awards given to Mike have created controversy due to the significant difference in album sales and streams to other mainstream rap artists like Travis Scott and Drake.
Scott surpassed two billion streams overall on Spotify with his “Utopia” album released in 2023. Drake had one billion streams on “To All the Dogs,” while Mike’s album “Michael” only had 41 million streams.
“Travis Scott should have won the rap album of the year, and not Mike because no one knows who that is,” claimed senior Andrew Keller, who watched the Grammys.
On the other hand, some people do not have an opinion on the results. The category did not catch their attention enough for them to have an opinion on it.
Junior Justice Lucas said, “I do not have an opinion on it. I have heard of the results, but personally, it is not a person I know, so I do not care for it.”
Personal preferences about music sway people’s opinions. The question of who had the talent and deserved the awards has yet to have a definite answer, but the fact that we are discussing it proves the point that they are still relevant.
