Halloween dress codes are unfair to students

Our school’s safety rules are killing creativity and the Halloween spirit. At Fuquay-Varina High School we eagerly await one of the most popular holidays, Halloween. It is the one day where people get to be creative and have fun by dressing up and cosplaying as their favorite scary characters.

Although this is a fun time to have fun and create memories and connect with others, there are many restrictions when it comes to participating in dressing up for Halloween at FVHS. These restrictions include no fake blood, fake props, masks covering the face or face paint. These rules can make it difficult for people to decide on what costumes to wear to school and even make people not want to participate at all.

“I feel like all the rules honestly discouraged me from actually dressing up. We should be able to express our ideas and have fun on Halloween,” said junior Hannah Mandel.

These restrictions also take all the spirit and creativity out of Halloween. All these rules restrict students’ self-expression and turn a fun Halloween day into another regular school day.

“Halloween is about being creative and standing out, but when you’re met with all these rules, it limits how unique your outfit can be and everyone ends up wearing the same simple outfits rather than showing their real ideas,” said junior Jasmine Terrasse.

Some people argue that these rules are placed to keep students safe. Masks and face paint can obstruct students’ faces and can create an unsafe environment. These disguises can also create distractions in the learning environment, along with fake blood and props.

These limitations are unfair to students and make Halloween just another regular school day. Halloween should be the one day where people can come together, dress up and have a good time.
