Dogs are honestly the best pets anyone could ever have. There is just something about them that makes life so much better. They’re loyal, funny, protective and they love you no matter what. No matter how bad your day has been, the second you walk through the door, your dog acts like you’re the most important person in the world. They jump, wag their tails and make you feel wanted in a way that nothing else really can. Their love doesn’t depend on how you look, how popular you are or what mood you’re in, they just love you because you’re their person.
Dogs also make people happier and healthier without even trying. When you have a dog, you go outside more, walk more and just move around just in general. Even when you don’t feel like doing anything, their energy gets you up. They bring joy that’s contagious, so much that you can’t help but smile when your dog runs up to you with its tongue out and tail wagging. Studies even say being with dogs lowers stress and helps with anxiety. And it’s true, sometimes just sitting next to your dog and petting them makes everything feel lighter.
Another thing that makes dogs so special is how they understand emotions. You don’t have to say anything, if you’re upset, your dog somehow just knows that. They’ll come sit beside you quietly or rest their head on your lap, like they’re saying, ‘it’s okay, I’m here.’ They don’t need words to comfort you. It’s like they can read your feelings better than most people can. They’re not just pets, they are actual emotional support without even meaning to be.
Junior Ipsitha Karnam described it perfectly, “ I love it when my dog comes and sits next to me and how she chooses me over other people; it makes me feel like I’m loved and important.” That’s what makes dogs so different. They make you feel valued, even in silence.
Dogs are also amazing because they are protective. They make you feel safe, whether it’s barking at the noises outside or just staying close when you’re alone. Big or small, every dog has an instinct to look out for their owner. They’re brave in ways that even humans aren’t. There are so many stories of dogs saving their owners, warning them of danger or sticking by their side no matter what. It’s like they’re built to love and protect at the same time.
But aside from all that deep stuff, dogs are just fun to be around. They have the funniest personalities, and you can never be bored with them. The way they tilt their head when you talk or the way they steal your socks and act like it’s a game is hilarious. They fill the house with energy and life. Even on boring days, they make everything interesting.
Diya Krishnan Karthikeyan, a sophomore at FVHS said, “What always makes me happy is seeing dogs having fun, like when they chase their own tails. They look so carefree, like their only worry in the world is catching that tail.” Dogs remind us to enjoy the simple things in life, even something as silly as running in circles.
And what’s really special about dogs is that they become part of your family. You start planning your day around them, you talk to them like they understand, and when you go on trips, you miss them like crazy. They don’t feel like just pets, they feel like someone who belongs in your life. The bond you build with your dog is something you can’t really explain to someone who’s never had one. It’s love, friendship and loyalty, all mixed together.
Sure, cats are cute and playful, and other pets have their own charm, but dogs are different. They love harder, care deeper and give you more joy than anything else. They make you laugh when you’re sad and stand by you even when no one else does. Having a dog means having a best friend who will never leave your side. And honestly, that’s why dogs will always be better.
