As the annual Powderpuff game approaches, excitement is building across grade levels at Fuquay-Varina High School.
The tradition of flag football brings out the competitive spirit in players and coaches, and this year’s matchups are shaping up to be just as intense as ever.
For the seniors, confidence is running high.
“We’re carrying the same energy we had last year, beating the seniors,” said senior Nyla Robinson-Partridge.
Robinson-Partridge added that her class stands out because of its past success and how the 2026 class won last year.
She believes the seniors’ experience gives them an edge, but she still sees the juniors as tough opponents because some of them are her flag football teammates.
The coaching staff also plays a big role in preparing the players.
“I’ve been coaching every year, so I just wanted to keep the tradition going. It’s fun to be out there with the girls and teach them,” said senior coach Corbin Peacock.
While Peacock believes his football experience helps, he added that many of the other coaches also bring playing experience.
“It definitely helps. I think most of the other coaches also play football, so everybody kind of has experience,” said Peacock.
Peacock also sent a confident message to the competition.
“The seniors are going to win…we’re going to win again this year,” said Peacock.
The juniors, however, are not backing down. Junior Simone Brecht said her team is focused on trust and teamwork.
“Our mindset going in is to have good communication with everyone and make sure everyone is comfortable,” said Brecht.
She also sees the seniors as the biggest competition, and her reason for joining was just as straightforward.
“I wanted to hang out with my friends and try something new,” said Brecht.
The underclassmen will be competing as a combined team this year. Sophomore Alexis Lassiter said she’s thrilled to be part of the tradition and believes they have a good chance of winning.
“I’m really excited just to try a new sport and have fun. Some of us are very dynamic and we have good coaches, so I feel like we’ll do pretty good,” said Lassiter.
Like others, she pointed to the seniors as the toughest matchup. Her reason for signing up came down to fun and friendship.
“My friends and I wanted to do it, and it’s a good way to represent your school,” said Lassiter.
Freshman Madelyn Cappola is also optimistic about her team’s chances.
“I think we have a good shot at winning,” said Cappola.
For her, Powderpuff is also about stepping into something new.
“I wanted to just meet a bunch of new people and just try something new,” said Cappola.
As excitement builds and the teams prepare for game day, players are ready to show their skills, teamwork and school spirit.
With each grade bringing a mix of confidence, energy and school spirit, and with the underclassmen teaming up, the Powderpuff game promises not only a close competition but also a celebration of tradition and community at FVHS.
